getting older in style

Friday was my birthday! We decided to celebrate at Ravinia with our best friends.

Feist provided a nice atmosphere of music to chill to.

The weather was perfect- not too hot, not too buggy, and it turned into a beautiful starry night.

The lawn tickets were sold out, so we got there nice and early to stake out our area.

We had a delicious smorgisborg of picnic food including sandwiches, fruit and a chocolate dessert.

AND Malachi, Kayleigh, and Selah made some tasty cupcakes for me. THANKS KIDS!

We played Phase 10- and I pretty much dominated the game (I AM the birthday girl...)

And when the sun went down, we told stories...

played more games...

laughed...

... and some danced.

Thanks for the great party!! You guys are so FUN and we're so BLESSED to have such awesome friends :)

Challenged

Last week was Challenge 2008- an Evangelical Free Church youth conference for 7th-12th graders. This year it was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Adam and I went as youth leaders along with 4 other leaders and 31 teens. We had a blast!

This year Starfield, the featured band, led worship for all 9 rallies. We were fans before going and even bigger fans now! It was awesome to see how a predominantly Christian rock band could maintain their quality and style while leading 5,500 kids in amazing God-centered worship.

Below, cracking jokes and signing Bibles with JD Greear

The rallies included amazing speakers, performers, skits, and even got the audience involved in an effort to set a Guinness world record: the largest Kazoo ensemble! All 5,000+ of us kazoo-ed Amazing Grace for over 4 minutes! It was... beautiful :) Word on the street says that St. Louis may have broken the record on July 4th though... we shall see. To hear it, check out Amazing Grace (and fast forward a couple minutes).

Our group, along with Jon's (my bro-in-law's) church, got to stay all week at the Hilton. It was a gorgeous hotel across the street from the conference center and complete with a pool, workout room, sun deck, etc. Quite different from the non-air conditioned dorm rooms at Purdue 8 years ago! (remember that Karen!)

Throughout the week, our group really bonded. We played several games of ultimate frisbee, soccer, football, and volleyball. We went on a late night excursion to McD's, shopped at the mall, {tried to} donate our lunches to the homeless, played cards and had some great discussions.

Above, not particularly known for our volleyball skills (soccer's our thing) the girls decide to go with the "distract the other team" method by dressing in crazy outfits. It didn't work.

Below, 4 guys drink 36 cartons of milk one morning... a GEFC tradition.

One afternoon, we helped in packaging 58,000 bags of food for kids in Congo. It just so happened that we participated at the same time as Calvary EFree (my home church in CT), an EFree church in Annandale, VA (my aunt and uncle's church) and the church pastored by old CT friends (Matt and Olivia). It was a lot of fun to see so many people I know from all over the country.

It amazes me how every Challenge conference I go to (this was my 6th!) they seem to get better and better. And the speakers are so challenging even for me being 8 (gasp!) years out of high school. I think the most poignant lesson I learned last week was how much we need God and ONLY God. There are so many things in life that we value, hold on to, depend on, and even idolize. But nothing and no one can satisfy us or save us except for Jesus Christ. I know that, and I believe that, but my actions and attitudes do not always follow that. I pray that I'm up to the challenge of living for His Glory all the days He has blessed me with.

2 Peter 1:3 "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness."

rasberried

A couple weeks ago, I got a package in the mail. It was a cute little bear named "Rasberry" who belongs to my cousin's daughter, Ashley.

Ashley's class is working on learning about different places around the country and since it'd be tough for her to travel, she sent Rasberry as her ambassador. Rasberry arrived unannounced from San Antonio just in time to go to a Cubs game

She also had the opportunity to ride the train with me into work one day.

We took pictures of her everywhere she went and journaled for her so that Ashley could see all the exciting places and things she did.

I think she had a lot of fun in Chicag0 since we're definitely her coolest cousins ;)

It was a little embarrassing at times. But I'm sure someday I'll be a mom and call on people to do these silly things for my kids, and so I'm ok with it. (But don't get any ideas- I'm not making a hobby of it!)

Reuniting with friends

Just went to my high school best friend’s wedding in Connecticut. We lost touch over the years, but our bond is still strong. It was fun being there and remembering good old times with Julie (now Dr. Julie) and reminiscing about the crazy stuff we did together.

They had a full out Catholic mass wedding ceremony. The reception was at a gorgeous place on a lake in Monroe, and boy do they know how to party!

The couple had a cute love story- I remember she had the biggest crush on her brother’s best friend in high school, but it took both of them separately moving to Virginia 6 years later for him to notice her and fall in love.

I sat with three friends from marching band. I didn’t know anyone else and it sure was tough not having Adam there with me! Hmm, I don’t think I’ll be going to weddings by myself anymore, ok hun!?

barbecuing for two

What a beautiful spring weekend we just had! On Saturday we rode our bikes to church to help out with a car wash, then went to a graduation party in the evening. I was outside for a total of 9 hours! (and have very red arms to show for it!)

For lunch on Sunday we spontaneously decided to have a barbecue. But since we have no yard, picnic table or chairs, we did it tailgating style in the driveway!

Adam has amazing skills when it comes to grilling. Our burgers were big, juicy and delicious.

We even had a some entertainment as we dined. Across the street, we saw a guy pulled over, given a sobriety test, and then handcuffed and taken away! The whole ordeal involved 3 police cars, a fire engine and an ambulance. Quite an exciting Sunday afternoon in PR. I felt a little bad taking pictures, but I did get one:

Sunday evening we had a bonfire and s'mores at church. Overall, it was a great weekend. Adam and I decided we are both such summer people that maybe we should just move to someplace where it's always warm? Hmmm... maybe we will!
